6 Summer Skincare Tips!
Skincare is essential when it comes to taking care of your skin all year round but we need to have a skincare routine that is flexible or adapt to different ones each season for the betterment of our skin.
Summer is very hot and our body reacts to the heat differently than it does for the rest of the year. There is this common misconception that the main reason for summer breakouts is excess exposure to the sun. Even though the sun does
worsen acne, sweating, oil production and clogging of pores are the main factors.
Here are 6 summer skincare tips to help you to enjoy the summer break with glowing skin!
Sunscreen: It's a skincare product that protects the skin by creating a barrier disallowing the harmful UV rays of the sun to reach the skin. Sunscreen reduces the risk of developing sunburn, skin cancer, and inflammation and prevents skin discolouration. Sunscreen comes in different forms to accommodate the different skin types and preferences of everyone. When purchasing sunscreen, make sure it contains SPF 30 or above. These days many makeup products include SPF in them but the SPF content is less compared to how much is supposed to be worn so it's suggested to wear a layer of sunscreen even when wearing makeup. Sunscreen should be reapplied multiple times a day and even worn when indoors.
Drink water: Drinking water is a healthy habit with multiple favourable outcomes. Due to the heat, the body releases a lot of sweat than usual to keep the skin hydrated but our system needs a lot of water for that in the first place. A minimum of 3 litres of water should be consumed every day. Drinking water prevents skin dryness and improves its elasticity. Drinking a lot of water flushes out the toxins from the body impacting the overall health of the skin.
Moisturise: When you drink water you're hydrating your entire body whereas when you moisturise you're prioritising the hydration of your skin. The skin is the largest organ that's exposed to everything and it requires a lot of care. In the summer you may notice your skin gets flaky and very itchy, that's the result of a lack of moisture in the skin. Moisturising the skin helps in balancing the secretion of bodily oils and improves the overall texture of the skin. When moisturising, make sure to prioritise your lips as the skin on the lips is said to be the most sensitive. Another reason why skincare enthusiasts love moisturisers is that it enhances the effectiveness of the other products used in one's skincare routine.
Exfoliate: Exfoliating removes the dead skin from the surface and makes room for healthy cells. Collagen is the key to glowing skin and exfoliating boosts the production of just that. The prevention of clogged pores is also done by this process. Usage of cleansing scrubs, body brushes, and loofahs are all common exfoliating methods. Even though exfoliating is good for the skin, over-exfoliating can worsen the skin condition by irritating it. Do your research to know how to exfoliate your skin type as everyone's skin reacts differently.
Bathe in lukewarm water: No matter how tempting a warm shower may be, try to bathe in lukewarm water. The temperature is already hot and cool baths prevent over-drying of the skin. On the other hand, hot baths can remove the natural oils of the body causing the skin to get dry and itchy. Showering or washing your face after working out or being outdoors and sweating is a must. Besides the skin, cool water also helps to seal the conditioner in your hair giving you silky hair to match your glowing skin.
Avoid heavy creams and lotions: Wearing heavy creams and lotions is fine in the winter or any other cooler seasons but not in summer. People already don't wear heavy creams and lotions in the summer due to them being greasy and uncomfortable as it creates a thick layer. This thick layer clogs pores and the skin finds it hard to absorb making you feel slimy and sticky in the sun. Makeup also looks patchy and cakey when worn on top. In the hot and humid weather opt for water-based and gel-based products that are lightweight and oil-free.
Keep in mind that everybody has a different skin type. The tips and products that work for someone won't work for everyone. Consult a dermatologist to know what is best for your skin and treat your blemishes safely.
